How does structure impact human functioning and our ability to become self actualized/live to our highest potential and achieve greatness? How does a lack of structure degrade mental health and create or exacerbate depression and depressive symptoms?
While there is an immense body of research around the importance of structure, predictability and consistency for children, there is less research on the importance of these for adults as well. As a psychotherapist, weekly, I hear my clients talk about the frustrations of being ‘off track’ with their consistency leading to cognition dissonance and subsequent feelings of low self esteem.
Lack of structure and an excess amount of time leads to 'overchoice', overchoice leads to an inability to choose, dissatisfaction with your choice and leads to procrastination.
